How to recode your Google Cryptex

These instructions show how to recode the cryptex which was sent to the 10000 finalists of the Google DaVinci Code challenge.

The Google cryptex is a modified (crippled) version of the mini cryptex available from the same company that made the Google version. So if you're not one of the lucky finalists, you can buy your own.

The Google version has been modified so only 2 pins remain on the removable core. This makes the leftmost 3 code wheels unused. Only the rightmost 2 wheels must be correct to unlock the cryptex.

The default code set on the cryptex is GRAIL. Setting the wheels to spell GRAIL (or actually anything ending in IL since the first three wheels don't matter) will open it.

Open the cryptex

Locate the 2 set screws on either side of the end cap

Loosen (but don't remove) the set screws

Remove the end cap

The individual rings will now easily slide out

The code letter for each ring lines up with the notch on the inner metal ring (here the code is 'I')

Remove the outer plastic ring

Replace it, lining up the new code letter (X) with the notch

Put the rings back on, and replace the end cap

When replacing the endcap, makes you line up the notch in the endcap with the groove in the center tube. It is possible to put it on backwards.

Also make sure the set screws are flush with the side. If they stick out at all, they will prevent the cryptex from closing properly.
